Forest Lawn Cemetery

A Window to Buffalo History and Culture

Greetings from the Project Write/Right students at the Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy, Buffalo, NY, USA!  During the 2002-03 school year, we toured and studied Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.  Working with interns from Buffalo State College, we explored this interesting and beautiful place to learn more about our city's past and present.  Together, we created this website to show what we've learned.  Come on in!

General Project Description

Project Write/Right is an afterschool program for 3rd to 8th grade students at the Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy in Buffalo, NY, USA.  Badillo students work in small groups with interns from Buffalo State College. The goal of the project is for both the interns and Badillo students to learn how computers can be used to research and create projects, especially projects in the social studies.

This year (2002-03), our topic of inquiry is a very large, very old cemetery right here in the middle of Buffalo called Forest Lawn. There are people from Buffalo buried in Forest Lawn who were alive in the 1700's! So, for us, studying the cemetery was a good way to learn about Buffalo’s history – through the famous or important people who are buried there. Along the way, some of us got involved in things other than history. One group looked into the art of Forest Lawn and was surprised to find so much Greek and Egyptian sculpture. Another group got interested in the birds of Forest Lawn – the cemetery is the biggest aviary in Western New York. (To find out what an "aviary" is, you’ll have to visit this group's site!)

During the year, we went on tours of Forest Lawn. We decided about topics. We learned about the Six-Traits of writing. We learned how to create web pages, so we could share what we learned with you here. We looked for information in books, but mostly on the Internet. We wrote. Then we wrote some more. A local historian who is an expert on Forest Lawn came in and we interviewed him. We kept writing, finally creating the web pages that you’ll see here under "Student Work."

A lot of people helped with Project Write/Right. To find out who they are, please read further below, in the section called "People Involved." Thank you for your interest in our site!
