The Intensive Literacy Tutoring Initiative is a partnership program between International School #45, CEURE, and the West Side Promise Neighborhood Initiative (WSPN). The goal of the project is two-fold: (1) to provide students attending School #45 with intensive, diagnostic individualized instruction to support development and growth of literacy skills, and (2) to provide Buffalo State education majors with clinically-rich, intensive professional development opportunities to implement evidence-based practices.
The program was developed to support the recruitment, training, and ongoing supervision of approximately 20 Buffalo State education majors to serve as tutors, working with small groups of students afterschool. Initially, the program was designed as a “stand-alone” program, operating within the context, but separately from other programs taking place at School #45, either during the school day or after school. The program is designed to provide intensive, direct, diagnostic supplemental ELA instruction, using a research-based approach and formal curriculum aligned with New York State Common Core Learning Standards.
Through collaboration with Lynn Piccirillo, Principal at School #45, and the Buffalo Public Schools Office of State and Federal Programs, we’ve worked collaboratively to expand the design and implementation of the program. The resources provided by M & T Bank have been leveraged along with district funds to support a comprehensive after-school program, aligned with District goals and best practices in the field that has responded to the needs and requests of parents for quality after-school programming. This collaboration has resulted in CEURE being awarded a grant by the Buffalo Public Schools to coordinate the full after-school program during the 2016-2017 school year.
